Bosch eBike Chip Tuning or Digital Code? Differences, Risks and Error 504 (2026)
Anyone looking to get past the 25 km/h limit on a Bosch eBike faces two options: the classic tuning chip fitted to the speed sensor, or a digital configuration code. They look similar, but they work in completely different ways.
In this guide we compare the two solutions honestly: how they work, what problems they can cause (starting with the well-known error 504), what happens to your warranty, and how to work out which code your motor needs.
How a tuning chip for eBikes works
Most chips (often called dongles or tuning boxes) connect to the speed sensor near the rear wheel. The chip alters the signal reaching the motor, for example by making the system believe you're going slower than you really are. The motor therefore keeps assisting beyond 25 km/h.
This approach has a few typical side effects:
- Distorted speed and distance readings on the display, because the system receives a modified signal.
- Mechanical installation: you often need to get to the motor or the wiring.
- Manipulation detection: more recent Bosch systems check the plausibility of the signal and can flag the anomaly.
Error 504: the best-known problem with chips
For some years now, Bosch has built into its motors a system that detects manipulation of the speed sensor. When it triggers, error 504 appears on the display and assistance is heavily limited until the problem is resolved, often only by an authorised dealer.
On the Smart System (BES3) the situation is even stricter: chips applied to the sensor tend to generate errors in the reading of the wheel magnet. For more detail, read Bosch Smart System error 504: how to fix it.
How a digital configuration code works
The digital code doesn't add any components and isn't fitted to the sensor. It's a software configuration of the drive system: you buy the code, receive it by email and follow the activation procedure.
- No hardware to install on the motor, wiring or sensor.
- No disassembly of the bike.
- A code specific to your generation: there's one version for Bosch Gen 1–4 and one for the Smart System.
Chip tuning vs digital code: side by side
| Chip tuning | Velocodix digital code | |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Mechanical, on the sensor or inside the motor | Digital, no tools needed |
| Additional components | Yes (chip/dongle) | No |
| Sensor signal | Modified | Not physically modified |
| Risk of error 504 from sensor manipulation | High on recent motors | The sensor isn't touched |
| Smart System (BES3) | Problematic (magnet errors) | Dedicated code with 2 modes |
| Delivery | Physical shipping | Immediate, by email |
Which code does your Bosch eBike need?
It's the most common mistake we see: buying the wrong code for your generation. Here's how to find your way.
Bosch Gen 1, 2, 3 and 4
Classic Line, Active Line, Performance Line and Performance Line CX motors from the generations before the Smart System. Typical displays: Intuvia, first-generation Nyon, Kiox and Purion. The companion app is eBike Connect.
👉 The right code: Bosch eBike Gen 1–4 Code (69,99 €). Dedicated guides: Gen 2, Gen 3, Gen 4.
Bosch Smart System (BES3)
The most recent system. You can recognise it by displays and controls such as the Kiox 300, Kiox 500, Purion 200 and LED Remote, by the USB-C port and by the use of the eBike Flow app.
👉 The right code: Bosch Smart System BES3 Code (179,99 €).
The 2 modes of the BES3 code:
- Mode 1 – up to 32 km/h: the display shows the real speed. This is the configuration we recommend, because the system runs more stably.
- Mode 2 – up to 45 km/h: it works, but the display shows half the actual speed.

Warranty and the law: what you need to know
Any modification to the assistance system, whether with a chip or a code, can affect the manufacturer's warranty. Weigh this up before going ahead, especially on new bikes.
In Italy, a pedal-assist bike counts as such only if the assistance cuts out at 25 km/h. Beyond that threshold the vehicle falls into another category, with type-approval, registration plate and insurance requirements. The speed configuration is therefore intended for use on private property. More details in Why your eBike is limited and in our legal information.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the Gen 1–4 code on a Smart System bike?
No. The two systems are different and need different codes. Always check the display and app before buying.
Do I need a mechanic for the digital code?
No, you don't have to take anything apart. You receive the code by email and follow the activation procedure.
Is chip tuning cheaper?
It depends on the model, but on top of the price of the chip you have to add installation and any work needed to clear errors such as 504. The digital code has a fixed cost and no components to fit.
Can I reach 45 km/h with the Smart System?
Yes, with Mode 2 the system goes up to 45 km/h, with the display showing half the actual speed. We do recommend Mode 1 at 32 km/h, though, where the system runs better and the display shows the real speed.
With the BES3 code, can I still update the bike from the eBike Flow app?
Yes, with the Smart System code you can carry out Bosch updates as normal.
In short
Chip tuning works on the sensor and, on recent Bosch motors, exposes you to errors such as 504. The digital code works on the configuration, with no extra components, but you have to choose the right one for your generation. Pick the Bosch Gen 1–4 Code or the Bosch Smart System BES3 Code, and if you have any questions just write to us.
