Perché la tua E-Bike è limitata (e cosa puoi fare davvero)

Why Your eBike Is Limited (and What You Can Really Do About It)

Modern eBikes offer comfort, pedal assistance and a smooth riding experience. But after the first few rides almost everyone asks the same question: why does it always stop at 25 km/h?

The answer is more interesting than it seems — and above all it has nothing to do with the power of the motor.

The limit isn't mechanical, it's a choice

In almost every case the assistance cuts out at 25 km/h because of a decision made by the manufacturers, not because the motor can't push any further.

The factory settings are there to comply with European regulations, to keep the bike within the pedal-assist bicycle category and to guarantee consistent behaviour across every unit sold.

In Europe an eBike remains a bicycle as long as the assistance cuts out at 25 km/h and the continuous rated power does not exceed 250 W. Beyond that threshold the vehicle changes legal category.

To put it plainly: your eBike could do more, but it is deliberately limited.

What actually changes beyond the limit

People who configure their bike don't do it for the numbers, but for three very tangible sensations.

More continuous assistance. The sharp “cut-off” when you reach the threshold disappears: your pedalling stays natural instead of suddenly becoming heavy.

Less effort over long distances. Holding a higher cruising speed with constant assistance makes a real difference on a long route.

More direct response. The bike follows what you ask of it more closely, without that step halfway through the acceleration.

Two routes, very different from each other

Chip tuning

It is physically fitted to the speed sensor and alters its signal, making the motor believe you are going slower. It requires access to the wiring, it falsifies the speed and mileage on the display, and on recent Bosch motors it is the number one cause of error 504: the system recognises the manipulated signal and limits the assistance.

The digital configuration code

It adds no components and doesn't touch the sensor: it works on the software configuration of the drive system. No hardware, no disassembly, no falsified signal to be detected.

How it works in practice

  1. You check which system you have — Bosch Gen 1–4 or Smart System BES3: they are not compatible with each other
  2. You buy the matching code
  3. You receive the code and a step-by-step guide by e-mail, usually within a few minutes
  4. You connect the bike to your PC with a data cable (Micro-USB for Gen 1–4, USB-C for BES3)
  5. You complete the procedure in about 5 minutes

Identifying the system is the part that matters: power button and LEDs in the top tube of the frame → Smart System. Everything on the handlebars → Gen 1–4. Guide: Gen 1–4 vs Smart System BES3.

Velocodix digital codes for Bosch eBike

Software configuration of the drive system: no chip on the sensor, no disassembly. Delivery by e-mail, step-by-step guide and technical support included.

Do you have a Segway Ninebot scooter instead of an eBike? This is the dedicated code. If you're unsure about your Bosch system, write to us at info@velocodix.it with a photo of the display before you buy: the digital code is not refundable once delivered.

Responsible use: let's be clear

Going beyond the type-approval limits is not an adjustment: it takes the vehicle out of the bicycle category and moves it into the moped category, with everything that entails in terms of type-approval, number plate, insurance, helmet and licence. And it invalidates the conformity declared by the manufacturer.

That's why the configuration is intended for use on private property or in contexts where it is permitted by law. Regulations vary from country to country: it's always worth checking first. Details in our legal information.

It's also worth considering the effect on the manufacturer's warranty, especially on a new bike.

In short

Your eBike isn't limited by its capabilities, but by its settings. Understanding that changes the way you look at the vehicle you already have in your garage.

If you decide to take action, two things matter: which system you have — because Gen 1–4 and Smart System require different codes — and where you'll be using it.
