Bosch eBike Gen 1-4 vs Smart System BES3: Complete Guide to the Differences and Setup
If you own an eBike with a Bosch motor, sooner or later you have wondered what the difference between the various systems is and which code yours needs. It is the most important question to settle, because the two systems are not compatible with each other: in this guide you will find everything you need to get it right.
Bosch eBike Gen 1-4: the classic system
Bosch systems of the first, second, third and fourth generation have been fitted to millions of eBikes across Europe from 2011 onwards. They are robust, reliable systems and still very widespread today.
Key features
- Connection to the PC via Micro-USB cable
- Displays: first-generation Intuvia, Purion, Kiox, Nyon
- Reference app: eBike Connect
- Motors: Classic Line, Active Line, Performance Line, Performance Line CX, Cargo Line
How to recognise it
If the display is a classic Intuvia, Purion, Kiox or Nyon and all the controls are on the handlebar, you have a Gen 1-4 system. Confirm it with the motor serial number: Gen 1-4 systems start with BDU2xx, BDU3xx or BDU4xx.
Bosch Smart System BES3: the new generation
The Bosch Smart System (technical code BES3) arrived in 2021 and represents a change of architecture, not an update. It is the system fitted to almost every new Bosch eBike.
Key features
- Connection via USB-C and Bluetooth
- Over-the-air updates from your smartphone
- Displays and controls: Kiox 300, Kiox 500, Purion 200, Intuvia 100, LED Remote, System Controller
- Reference app: eBike Flow
- Integration with SmartphoneGrip and Mini Remote
- Optional ABS system
How to recognise it
If the display is a Kiox 300, Purion 200 or Intuvia 100, or if the bike uses the eBike Flow app, you have a Bosch Smart System BES3. The most immediate clue, though, is still the frame: a power button and LEDs in the top tube mean Smart System.
Careful: Gen 4 and Smart System are not the same thing
This is the misunderstanding that causes the most wrong purchases. There are traditional Gen 4 bikes and Gen 4 Smart System bikes: same motor, different platforms. For the same reason, “Performance Line CX” on its own identifies nothing.
Always go by the app and the frame, not by the motor name.

How the digital setup works
Velocodix supplies digital license keys that are specific to each system. The process is entirely software-based: no chip to fit on the sensor, no dismantling of the motor, about 5 minutes for the whole procedure.
Bosch Gen 1-4
- Connect the eBike to your PC with a Micro-USB data cable (not a charge-only one)
- Open the activation tool indicated in the guide you receive by e-mail
- Enter the license key
- Follow the guided procedure
Bosch Smart System BES3
- Get to the USB-C port (on the display or under the System Controller, two screws)

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the Gen 1-4 code on my BES3?
No. The two systems are incompatible with each other and it is essential to buy the correct one: the digital code is not refundable after delivery.
Is the setup reversible?
On the Bosch Smart System BES3 yes, by following the same procedure. On Gen 1-4 systems it depends on the configuration: write to us first if that is a requirement for you.
Do I need any special tools?
No. You need a PC, a data cable (Micro-USB for Gen 1-4, USB-C for BES3) and the code you receive by e-mail. A charge-only cable is the most common mistake.
What about the warranty?
Any work on the assistance system can affect the manufacturer's warranty. It is worth considering, especially on a new bike.
In short
Gen 1-4 and Smart System BES3 are two different platforms, with different cables, apps, displays and codes. Identifying yours before you buy is the only step that really matters — everything else is straightforward.
