How to Unlock a Bosch Smart System eBike in 2026: Complete Guide
eBikes fitted with the Bosch Smart System are among the most widespread electric bikes in Europe: advanced connectivity through the eBike Flow app, wireless updates and some of the most reliable motors on the market.
The question we get asked most often is always the same: can you configure the maximum assisted speed, and how? In this guide we answer it directly — what is possible in 2026, what the two available modes are, how they differ and what you need to know before you go ahead.
What the Bosch Smart System is
The Bosch Smart System (technical designation BES3) is the most recent generation of Bosch eBike systems. Its typical components are:
- Performance Line CX, Performance Line, Cargo Line and SX motors in the Smart System version
- Kiox 300, Kiox 500, Purion 200 and LED Remote displays
- A System Controller built into the top tube of the frame
- The Bosch eBike Flow app
The quickest way to tell: if your bike uses the eBike Flow app and has the power button and LEDs in the frame, it is a Smart System. If it uses eBike Connect and everything sits on the handlebar, it is an earlier generation (Gen 1–4).
Watch out for a very common misunderstanding: Gen 4 and Smart System are not the same thing. There are traditional Gen 4 bikes and Gen 4 Smart System bikes, with the same motor but completely different platforms.
What the speed limit is
In most European countries the electric assistance cuts out at 25 km/h. Beyond that threshold the motor gradually stops pushing, and on the flat or downhill that produces the drag everyone is familiar with.
The two modes: 32 km/h or 45 km/h
The software configuration of the Bosch Smart System offers two modes. They are not equivalent, and the choice matters.
Mode 1 — up to 32 km/h (the one we recommend)
- The display shows your real speed
- The system runs more stably
- Lower chance of software errors
- Simpler to use, no readings to interpret
Mode 2 — up to 45 km/h
- A much higher top speed
- The display shows half the speed: at a real 40 km/h you read 20
- On some setups the system can be less stable
Mode 2 works, but the halved display is a real compromise you have to live with every day. That is why, in most cases, we recommend Mode 1.
Chip tuning: why it is a problem on the Smart System
The alternative route — a chip fitted to the speed sensor — is particularly problematic on the Smart System. Recent Bosch motors run a plausibility check on the speed signal: when they detect an altered signal, they limit the assistance and show error 504.
The digital code does not touch the sensor: it acts on the software configuration, so there is no falsified signal to detect. Read more: chip tuning or digital code? and error 504: how to fix it.
Compatibility
The Smart System code is compatible with:
- Bosch Performance Line CX Smart System
- Bosch Performance Line Smart System
- Bosch Cargo Line Smart System
- Bosch Performance Line SX Smart System
Always check your exact model before you go ahead. If you are unsure, a photo of the display is all we need to tell you for certain which system you have.
Where the USB-C port is
Activation on the Smart System goes through a USB-C cable. On systems with a System Controller you reach the connection point like this:
- Remove the two screws of the System Controller on the top tube.
- Gently pull the module out of the frame.
- Lift the small rubber cap on the back.
The position can vary slightly depending on the bike manufacturer. Dedicated guide: Bosch Smart System USB-C port.
Use a USB-C data cable, not a simple charging cable: this is the most common mistake and it stops the system being recognised.
Bosch Smart System BES3 code — Velocodix
Software configuration with the two modes described above: 32 km/h with the real speed on the display, or 45 km/h with a halved display. No chip on the sensor, no parts to fit. Activation via USB-C cable, with the code usually delivered by e-mail within a few minutes.
Bosch Smart System BES3 code — 179,99 €
Do you have a Bosch Gen 1–4 instead (eBike Connect app, Intuvia, Purion, Nyon or Kiox display on the handlebar)? You need the Gen 1–4 code, not this one. If in doubt, write to us at info@velocodix.it with a photo of your display before you buy: the digital code is non-refundable once it has been delivered. Speed configuration is intended for use on private property.
Updates and the eBike Flow app
With the Smart System code you can still carry out Bosch updates from the eBike Flow app as normal. Even so, it is good practice to check compatibility before updating, especially if third-party accessories are fitted to the bike.
Warranty and regulations
Any work on the assistance system can affect the manufacturer's warranty: it is worth weighing up, especially on a new bike.
In Europe a pedal-assist bike only remains one if the assistance cuts out at 25 km/h and the continuous rated power does not exceed 250 W. Beyond that threshold the vehicle falls into another category, with type-approval, number plate, insurance and helmet requirements. That is why speed configuration is intended for use on private property. Details in our legal information.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work with Android and iPhone? Yes, the Bosch eBike Flow app is available for both.
Does the configuration stay in place after switching the bike off? Yes, the configuration is persistent.
My Smart System has ABS: is it compatible? Compatibility can vary depending on the model and the features fitted. Write to us before buying and we will check it together.
Can I use the Gen 1–4 code on a Smart System bike? No. They are different platforms and they need different codes. It is the most common mistake we see, and it is why we insist on checking beforehand.
Do I need a mechanic? No. Nothing is taken apart beyond the System Controller to reach the USB-C port: two screws.
In summary
On the Bosch Smart System, speed configuration is possible in two modes, 32 or 45 km/h, and in most cases the first is the better choice: a correct display and a more stable system.
The thing not to get wrong is the generation: Smart System and Gen 1–4 need different codes and are not interchangeable. If in doubt, send us a photo of your display before you buy.
