Bosch Smart System Error 504: How to Fix It in 2026

Error 504 is one of the most talked-about codes among Bosch Smart System users, and also one of the most misunderstood. Online you'll often see it described as a generic "system error": in most real-world cases, it isn't.

In this guide we look at what error 504 actually signals, why it shows up almost always on bikes fitted with a tuning chip, and what you can do to fix it in 2026.

What error 504 actually signals

On recent Bosch motors, error 504 is linked to the plausibility check on the speed signal. The system constantly compares the data it receives from the wheel sensor with the other riding parameters: if the values don't add up, it concludes that the signal has been altered and limits the assistance.

That's why 504 almost always appears on bikes with a tuning chip fitted to the speed sensor: the chip works precisely by making the motor believe you're going slower than you really are, and that is exactly what this check was designed to catch.

It isn't a mechanical fault. It's the system doing what it was programmed to do.

Typical symptoms

  • Noticeably reduced motor power
  • Assistance cutting out much earlier than normal
  • Code 504 on the display (or in the eBike Flow app on the Smart System)
  • Emergency mode or permanently reduced performance
  • Visibly slower acceleration

The bike keeps working, but with heavily reduced assistance.

When it appears

After installing a tuning chip

By far the most common case. Sometimes the error shows up straight away, sometimes after weeks: it depends on how much inconsistent data the system has built up.

After a firmware update

Very common on bikes with a chip already fitted that had stayed "invisible" until then: the update brings in stricter checks and the chip gets detected.

Sensor or magnet out of position

Even without any chip, a magnet that has shifted, is dirty or isn't the original can produce inconsistent readings. It's the most mundane cause, and it's always worth ruling out first.

Communication or wiring problems

A corroded connector or a damaged sensor cable can produce exactly the same picture.

How to fix error 504

1. Remove the chip, if there is one

As long as the chip stays fitted, the error won't go away for good. Take it off and return the sensor to its original configuration.

2. Check the magnet and the sensor

Make sure the magnet is aligned with the sensor on the chainstay, at the correct distance (roughly 5–17 mm depending on the system), clean and original. Check that the sensor is firmly fixed: it tends to work loose with vibration.

3. Full restart

A proper shutdown, battery removed and refitted, then power back on. Standby isn't enough.

4. Ride a few kilometres

If the cause was temporary, the system re-evaluates the signal during normal use and the message may disappear after a few kilometres.

5. Diagnostics at a dealer

If the error persists, it needs to be read in diagnostics. The system keeps an error history: a technician connected to the official software can see when the error was triggered and under what conditions. In some cases only the dealer can clear the limitation.

Tuning chip and digital code: why they aren't the same thing

The whole difference is right here, and it explains why error 504 affects one solution and not the other.

A tuning chip is physically fitted to the speed sensor and alters its signal. It's precisely that altered signal that the Bosch plausibility check recognises.

A digital configuration code adds no components and doesn't touch the sensor: it acts on the software configuration of the drive system. There is no falsified signal to detect.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep riding with error 504?

Yes, in most cases, but with reduced assistance. It isn't a dangerous condition.

Does error 504 damage the motor?

No. The code in itself causes no damage: it's a software limitation.

Do I need to replace the battery?

Normally no. 504 doesn't indicate a battery problem.

Does it go away on its own?

If the cause was a magnet out of position or a one-off reading, it can disappear after a few kilometres. If the cause is a chip fitted to the sensor, no: it will come back as long as the chip stays there.

Will the dealer notice I had a chip?

The system keeps an error history that is visible in diagnostics. That's worth knowing before you take the bike in for warranty service.

Do I really need a Bosch workshop?

Only if the error persists after you've removed any chip, checked the magnet and sensor, and restarted the system.

In short

Error 504 isn't a fault: it's the Bosch check on the speed signal that has been triggered. In the vast majority of cases the cause is a chip fitted to the sensor, and the fix starts with removing it.

Always rule out the simple causes first — magnet, contacts, restart — and only then move on to diagnostics. And if your goal was to configure the speed, it's worth knowing there's a route that doesn't touch the sensor at all.
