Electric Scooter Maintenance: A Practical Seasonal Guide
A well-maintained electric scooter lasts twice as long as a neglected one. Maintenance does not require advanced technical skills: 30 minutes a month is enough to keep your scooter safe and running efficiently.
Monthly maintenance (30 minutes)
1. Check the tyre pressure
Pneumatic tyres lose pressure over time. The right pressure improves range, comfort and stability.
- Check the recommended pressure in the manual (usually 40-50 PSI)
- Use a bike pressure gauge or another good-quality one
- Under-inflated tyres drain more battery and increase the risk of a puncture
2. Check the brakes
The brakes are your most important safety system. Check:
- Braking distance: from 25 km/h it should stop within 4-6 metres
- Pad wear (disc brakes)
- Unusual noise while braking
- Play in the brake lever
3. Visual inspection
- Check the steering stem: it should not wobble
- Check the folding mechanism: it must lock perfectly
- Check the screws and bolts: tighten any that are loose
- Inspect the electrical cables: they should not be pinched or frayed
4. Cleaning
- Wipe the deck with a damp cloth
- Remove dust and debris from the wheels
- Never use a direct jet of water
- Dry it thoroughly after cleaning
Seasonal maintenance
Early spring (after the winter)
- Fully recharge the battery if it has been in storage
- Thorough check of the brakes and tyres
- Lubricate the pivots and moving parts
- Check the display and the lights
- Update the firmware if an update is available
Late autumn (before the winter)
- Charge the battery to 40-60% for winter storage
- Store it somewhere dry at a temperature between 10-15°C
- Cover the scooter to protect it from dust
Common problems and solutions
| Problem | Likely cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Reduced range | Under-inflated tyres or a degraded battery | Inflate the tyres, calibrate the battery |
| Squeaking brakes | Worn pads or a dirty disc | Clean the disc, replace the pads |
| Vibration in the steering | Loose screws or worn bearings | Tighten the screws, take it to a technician |
| App error | Firmware out of date | Update it through the official app |
When to see a technician
Take your scooter to a specialist technician if:
- The braking distance keeps increasing despite your checks
- You hear unusual noises from the motor
- The battery does not charge properly
- The display keeps showing error codes
