Bosch Smart System: Cosa Fare Dopo l'Aggiornamento Firmware nel 2026

Bosch Smart System: What to Do After a Firmware Update in 2026

You've just updated the firmware on your Bosch Smart System eBike and something feels different? You're not alone. Every OTA update can change how the motor behaves, the assistance parameters and your saved settings.

In this guide you'll find what actually changes after an update, what to check straight away and — the part most riders care about — what happens to the configurations already on the bike.

How Bosch Smart System updates work

The Smart System supports OTA (Over-The-Air) updates through the Bosch eBike Flow app: Bosch can change the software of the motor, display and battery remotely, without a trip to the workshop.

Updates can cover the motor (Performance Line CX, Performance Line, Cargo Line, SX), the display (Kiox 300, Kiox 500, Purion 200), the PowerTube battery and the System Controller.

What can change after an update

Assistance modes. Bosch can revise the parameters for Eco, Tour, Sport and eMTB: under the same conditions, the motor may respond differently.

Behaviour at 25 km/h. The point at which assistance cuts out can vary slightly from one firmware to the next: some riders find it smoother, others sharper.

Display. Graphics, new screens, information laid out differently.

App. The eBike Flow app updates separately and can change features and the menu layout.

What to do right after the update

1. Check your custom settings. Some updates reset saved preferences: open the app again and check your customised assistance modes.

2. Take a proper test ride. At least 10–15 km before you judge. Many of the “differences” you notice on day one disappear on their own.

3. Check the error codes. If a code appears on the display or in the app, start here: Bosch eBike error codes.

4. Bring the app up to date too. A mismatch between app and firmware is a frequent cause of odd behaviour.

⚠️ If error 504 appeared after the update

This is by far the most common scenario, and it has a precise explanation.

Recent Bosch motors run a plausibility check on the speed signal. Updates make this check stricter: a bike with a tuning chip fitted to the sensor, perhaps “invisible” until yesterday, gets detected after the update and the assistance is limited.

It isn't a fault and it isn't bad luck: it's the system doing what it was programmed to do. Full guide: error 504: how to fix it.

Updates and configurations already in place

The question we get most often: “if I update, do I lose the configuration?” The answer depends on how it was done.

Chip fitted to the sensor. This is the most exposed solution: an update can get it detected and lead to error 504.

Velocodix digital configuration code. There is no component on the sensor and no altered signal. With the Smart System code, Bosch updates through the eBike Flow app can be carried out as normal.

It's a practical difference that counts for a lot in everyday use: you don't have to decide each time whether to skip an update.

Important note: this applies to Bosch eBikes. On Segway Ninebot scooters the rule is the opposite — there, updates from the official app should not be carried out, either before or after.

Bosch Smart System BES3 Code — Velocodix

Software configuration with two modes: up to 32 km/h with the real speed shown on the display (the one we recommend) or up to 45 km/h with the display showing half the speed. No chip on the sensor, so no problems with Bosch updates. Activation via USB-C cable, code by e-mail usually within a few minutes.

Do you have a Bosch Gen 1–4 instead (eBike Connect app, display on the handlebar)? Then you need the Gen 1–4 code. If in doubt, write to us at info@velocodix.it with a photo of your display before you buy: the digital code is non-refundable once delivered. The speed configuration is intended for use on private property.

Can I go back to a previous firmware?

No. Bosch doesn't allow downgrades: once you've updated, there's no official way back. That's why it's worth knowing what an update involves before you start it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the update mandatory? No. The app tells you one is available but doesn't force the installation.

How long does it take? Between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on which components are involved.

The bike won't start after the update. Shut it down completely, wait two minutes, switch it back on. If the problem persists, contact an authorised Bosch service centre.

Does the update change the speed limit? The legal 25 km/h limit stays unchanged after official Bosch updates.

I have a chip and an update waiting: what should I do? Think twice before installing it. If error 504 has already appeared, the fix starts with removing the chip.

In short

Bosch updates improve stability and performance, but they also make the checks on the speed signal stricter.

If there's nothing fitted to the sensor on your bike, go ahead and update. If there is a chip, be aware that the update is exactly the moment it gets discovered.
