Bosch eBike Gen 1 (Classic Line): Come Sbloccare la Velocità nel 2026

Bosch eBike Gen 1 (Classic Line): How to Unlock the Speed in 2026

Do you have an electric bike with a Bosch Classic Line motor — perhaps a city or trekking bike from a few years back — and you've always wondered whether you can free it from the 25 km/h limit? In this guide, updated for 2026, you'll find what the first-generation Bosch system (Gen 1) is, why it's limited and how to configure it easily, with no cables or dongles.

What the Bosch Gen 1 system (Classic Line) is

The Bosch Classic Line, also known as the "Drive Unit Cruise", was Bosch's first eBike motor, launched in 2011 and produced until around 2014. It's a 250 W mid-drive motor with 50 Nm of torque and pedal assistance up to 25 km/h, with four riding modes.

You'll find it fitted to a great many city and trekking bikes from those years, from brands such as Cube, KTM, Haibike, Kalkhoff, Gazelle, Focus, Kreidler and many more. If your eBike is from that period and has an Intuvia or HMI display, you almost certainly have a Gen 1 system.

Why your Bosch eBike is limited to 25 km/h

Like every pedal-assist bike sold in Europe, the Bosch Classic Line is set to stop assisting at 25 km/h. It isn't a limit of the motor, but a software threshold imposed by the regulations on pedal-assist bicycles.

The motor itself is perfectly capable of carrying on beyond that: this is why advanced configurations exist, acting on the assistance threshold and letting you use the motor at higher speeds too.

How the code works

There was a time when you needed dongles, cables and modules physically wired to the speed sensor. Today the process is far simpler:

  • No cables, no dongles, no modules to install: it's all software.
  • Instant delivery: you receive the code by e-mail right after purchase, with a step-by-step guide.
  • Activation over a Micro-USB cable, connecting the eBike to your PC and following the tool indicated in the guide.
  • Permanent: once configured, it stays that way.

Compatibility: mind your display

This is the most important point for the Classic Line. The Gen 1 system came with two different displays:

  • Intuvia ✅ — supported
  • HMI ❌ — as a rule not supported

Before you buy, check which display you have: you can read it on the on-board computer. If you have the Intuvia, you're all set. If you have the older HMI or you're not sure, check for free with the Velocodix app or write to us at info@velocodix.it with a photo of the display before ordering. Digital codes are non-refundable once delivered.

If your eBike instead has the oval magnetic charging port, it isn't a Gen 1 but a Bosch Smart System (BES3), which needs a different code.

Is the speed shown correctly?

Good news if you have a Classic Line with an Intuvia display: unlike later generations, where the display shows roughly half the real speed, on the Gen 1 Intuvia the readings stay correct and legible. The Bosch riding modes also remain unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to open the motor or modify the hardware?
No. It's a software configuration: no work on the electronics, no cables to solder or dongles to fit.

Does it work on every Classic Line eBike?
It works on Gen 1 systems with the Intuvia display. For the HMI display, always check with us before buying.

Is it reversible?
The configuration is designed to stay active. If you have any doubts about your particular case, ask us before going ahead.

How do I know whether I have a Bosch Gen 1?
They're generally eBikes built between 2011 and 2014, with an Intuvia or HMI display. Send us the make, model and year of your bike and we'll help you identify it.

Legal notice

In Europe, pedal-assist bicycles are type-approved for road use with assistance up to 25 km/h. Configurations that go beyond this limit are intended exclusively for use on private land. Changing the limit can affect the warranty, insurance and type-approval of the vehicle: Velocodix is not responsible for any use that does not comply with the regulations in force in your country.

In short

If you have a Bosch Classic Line (Gen 1) eBike with an Intuvia display, configuration is straightforward: no cables or dongles, all done in software, with instant delivery. All you need to do is check the display before ordering.
