eBike and Scooter Batteries: How to Look After Yours and Make It Last Longer

The battery is the heart of your electric vehicle — and also the most expensive part to replace. An eBike battery can cost between €400 and €800, while a premium scooter battery runs from €150 to €400. Following the right usage and maintenance habits can double its working life.

How a lithium-ion battery works

eBike and electric scooter batteries are almost always lithium-ion (Li-Ion) or lithium-polymer (LiPo). These batteries have specific characteristics that shape how they should be used and stored.

A battery's working life is measured in charge cycles: one cycle equals a full charge from 0% to 100%. Most quality batteries are rated for 500-800 cycles before they lose significant capacity.

The 7 golden rules for your battery

1. Never run it all the way down

Draining the battery to 0% is one of the most damaging things you can do. Try to recharge when you reach 20-25%. Most vehicles give you a visual or audible warning at that level.

2. Don't always charge to 100%

Constantly charging to 100% speeds up degradation. For everyday use, keep the battery between 20% and 80%. Only charge to 100% when you're planning a long ride.

3. Charging temperature

Always charge the battery at room temperature (10°C - 30°C). Don't recharge straight after heavy use until the battery has cooled down. Don't recharge in very cold environments.

4. Long-term storage

If you're not using the vehicle for more than 2 weeks, store the battery at 40-60% charge. That's the optimal range for long-term storage.

5. Storage temperature

Store the vehicle (and the battery separately where possible) at a temperature between 10°C and 20°C. Avoid very cold garages in winter or sun-exposed balconies in summer.

6. Use the original charger

Third-party chargers may not respect the correct voltage and current parameters. Always use the manufacturer's original charger.

7. One full cycle a month

Even if you follow the 20-80% rule, do a full cycle (0% → 100%) once a month. This helps the battery calibrate itself correctly.

Signs your battery is degrading

How to tell whether your battery is losing capacity:

  • Range noticeably shorter than it was when new
  • The battery gets very warm while charging
  • The charge level drops quickly even with light use
  • The charger takes much longer than usual

Differences between eBikes and scooters

eBike batteries (Bosch)

Bosch PowerTube and PowerPack batteries use high-quality Samsung or LG cells. Bosch guarantees that after 500 cycles the battery still holds at least 60% of its original capacity. Built-in thermal management protects the battery from temperature swings.

Segway Ninebot batteries

Segway Ninebot batteries are built into the frame and aren't always removable (it depends on the model). On models with a non-removable battery, the vehicle needs to be stored at a controlled temperature. The MAX G2 and the G3 have sturdier batteries than the F series.

How long does a battery last?

Type Rated cycles Estimated years (daily use)
Bosch PowerTube 625 500+ 4-6 years
Segway Ninebot MAX G2 500+ 3-5 years
Segway Ninebot F2/F3 300-500 2-4 years

With the right maintenance habits you can stretch these figures by 20-30%.
